Starsand Island Performance Fix Guide
Learn how to fix Starsand Island frame rate drops, pop-in, and lag with our updated 1.0 performance guide — including PC settings, console tweaks, and driver updates.
Why Starsand Island Feels Laggy and How to Diagnose It
Starsand Island is a large open-world survival game, and even after the 1.0 update, many players still report frame rate drops, texture pop-ins, and stutter during exploration. Before changing anything, identify the root cause: open the game's built-in FPS counter (Steam: Shift+Tab -> Settings -> In-game FPS counter) or use the Xbox Game Bar on Windows. If your GPU usage is at 99% but your CPU is low, you're GPU-bound; if both are low, you may have a memory leak or a vsync issue. On PS5 or Xbox, check whether the game is running in performance mode rather than quality mode by going to Settings -> Graphics in the main menu.
Best PC Settings for a Stable 60 FPS
Start with the Low preset, then raise shadows and view distance one step at a time. For most GPUs, setting Shadow Quality to Medium and Anti-Aliasing to FXAA instead of TAA removes blur and reduces GPU load. Set V-Sync to Off in-game and cap your framerate to 60 via your driver (NVIDIA Control Panel or AMD Radeon Software) — this prevents input lag and uneven frame pacing. If pop-in bothers you, set Texture Streaming to High and Object Detail to High, but lower Grass Density to Low, because grass rendering is one of the heaviest costs in Starsand Island. Disable Motion Blur and Depth of Field; they have no gameplay benefit and consume GPU time. Finally, verify game files on Steam: right-click Starsand Island -> Properties -> Installed Files -> Verify integrity of game files to fix corrupted shader caches.
Console Performance Tweaks and Cache Clearing
On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, the most reliable fix is to switch to Performance Mode in the video options. If you still see frame drops, rebuild the database on PS5: turn off the console, unplug it for 30 seconds, then boot in Safe Mode (hold the power button until the second beep) and select 'Rebuild Database' — this will not delete saves. On Xbox Series X, go to Settings -> System -> Storage -> Clear local saved games and then restart the console; this clears game cache without removing cloud saves. Make sure your console firmware is up to date, and if you are using an external SSD, move Starsand Island to the internal NVMe SSD, since older drives cannot keep up with the world's streaming assets.
Driver Updates, File Cleanup, and Early Access Expectations
PC players should update GPU drivers before blaming the game. NVIDIA users should use GeForce Experience or download the latest Game Ready Driver, while AMD users should update via Adrenalin. Also check Windows Updates for the latest .NET and gaming service patches. In-game, close background overlays like Discord or your browser's hardware acceleration to free up VRAM. Finally, keep in mind that Starsand Island has been in early access and even the 1.0 release still has known optimization issues on older hardware. If your FPS is playable but not perfect, lower your resolution to 1080p and use NVIDIA DLSS or Intel XeSS if supported — the quality loss is far less noticeable than the stutter you'll avoid.
