Starsand Island Houseboat Guide: Unlock, Place, and Fix Layouts

How to use the Starsand Island houseboat when the blueprint says it only works on houseboats, where players find the vehicle, and what to check when a layout is missing blueprints.

Quick answer: place the boat before using the layout

If a houseboat blueprint or layout says it can only be used on houseboats, do not look for a normal workbench craft. Community reports point to this order: progress the Island Life path until the houseboat itself is unlocked, open the phone or vehicle list, place the empty Houseboat on water that is large and deep enough, then enter Build Mode or Layout while you are using that houseboat. Players who searched only the crafting table or land plots were looking in the wrong place. This is community-reported guidance, not an official walkthrough. The safe part is that it does not change save files or consume a one-time quest item: you are only checking the vehicle list and placement preview.

Where to find the Houseboat after unlocking it

Reddit and Steam players describe the houseboat as behaving more like a vehicle than a house recipe. After late Island Life progression unlocks it, check the phone's Vehicles or garage-style list, then summon the Houseboat onto open water. If the placement preview stays red, move to a wider and deeper water area before assuming the unlock is broken. One Reddit player who was stuck later confirmed they opened the Vehicles tab, summoned an empty Houseboat on water, and could then build on it with the layout. That makes the best first check simple: confirm you are trying to place the base Houseboat first, not trying to place the finished layout directly on land.

Why the layout says a blueprint is missing

Two different problems are easy to mix up. First, you may not have placed the empty Houseboat yet; fix that before testing layouts. Second, the layout may require furniture or landscaping blueprints you have not unlocked. A Steam player specifically called out the Sword-leaf Yellow Wildflower Cluster / flower cluster requirement, and another player reported that the related manual appeared in the Community Center store after the store feature refreshed. Official patch notes from an earlier 2026 update support this direction: the developers fixed the abnormal acquisition path for the Sword-leaf Yellow Wildflower Cluster blueprint and moved it to the Starsand Store. If your layout complains about that item, check the Starsand Store / community-center store rather than Lex Woodworks first.

Houseboat in co-op: update before troubleshooting

Official confirmed: version 1.09.5664 fixed multiple Houseboat-related co-op state issues, including the host seeing an abnormal Houseboat after a guest placed it and a guest's Houseboat remaining visible after the host closed the room while the guest was sailing it. If your Houseboat problem happens in multiplayer, patch first, have the host reload the room, then retest as the host. Do not use co-op as your first test for a suspected unlock problem. Place and enter the Houseboat in solo first, then open a co-op room once you know the base object exists in your own save.

What to report if it still fails

Stop guessing once you have checked the vehicle list, open water placement, Build Mode / Layout on the placed boat, the Starsand Store, and the current game update. A useful report should include your platform, build number, Island Life stage, whether the empty Houseboat appears in Vehicles, the exact missing-blueprint message, and whether the problem happened in solo or co-op. Avoid deleting saves, selling suspected layout items, or rolling back several days for a Houseboat layout problem unless the developers tell you to. Most evidence so far points to unlock path, blueprint availability, or version state, not save-file corruption.
